How to do the Pec Fly
Set the seat so the handles sit at about chest height and rest your forearms against the pads (or grip the handles) with a slight, fixed bend in your elbows. Keeping that elbow angle constant, squeeze your chest to bring the pads together in front of you. Pause briefly, then open back up under control until you feel a comfortable stretch across the chest — don’t force it past a natural range.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing your elbow angle. Keep the soft bend fixed — bending and straightening turns it into a press.
- Over-stretching at the back. Open only as far as is comfortable to protect the shoulder.
- Rushing the squeeze. Pause and contract the chest hard at the front.
Tips and who it’s for
The fly isolates the chest without the triceps and shoulders taking over, making it a great finisher after pressing or a way for beginners to learn to feel the chest working. Pair it with the cable chest fly for a different line of resistance.
